Make Your Own Glimmer Mists

In this tutorial I show you how I make my own glimmer mists. I store them in this recipe box I got from Michaels. It was unfinished when I bought it and I painted it black and then used Mod Podge to attach a scrap piece of scrapbook paper to it, wrapping all the way around, lid and all. I then used an razor blade to cut through so the lid can be opened. The box holds 47 Mini Misters!

You can find all my Shimmer Mist Combos HERE

This is what I use to scoop my Perfect Pearls into the Mini Misters. You can find the Darice Bead Scoop in the jewelry department at JoAnn's it costs about $2.

What a great idea! Thanks so much for sharing

Just wondering why couldn't you use rubbing alcohol? It would dry faster.

Great post by the way. I think I am going to give it a try.

The water sets the Perfect Pearls. I'm not sure if rubbing alcohol would work or what it would do to the objects I would be spraying it on. I spray the shimmer mist on lots of projects like cards, layouts, sticker, letters, die-cuts, etc. You know the motto, "if it's not broken don't fix it"? I think I'll stick to the ink, water, and perfect pearls formula. It's been working for me this long. Hope this helps.

Great idea! TFS! Where can one buy the empty mini misters?

Kristie Maynard May 25, 2010 at 4:31 PM

Great tutorial. I have done the water and perfect pearls, but haven't done any with inks. Gotta give that a try!

May I ask where you bought your Mini Misters? Did you buy them in bulk?
thank you!

I get my mini misters at Hobby Lobby or Michaels and unfortunately I have not found them in bulk. I paid for them 3 per package. You can use a coupon on them though and if you think about it, it is a lot cheaper than a bottle of Tattered Angels.

Great idea! Thanks.

Great idea. Love it. Thanks for sharing.

BTW -- I think I counted that you can store 50 bottles in your cute li'l storage box. (10 per rows of 5). :-)

Great tutorial and love the idea of using the Pearl Ex powder. I have lots of that and keep looking for uses! Thanks

Love the tutorial! I have never used these before, but I might give it a try now!

lynne May 27, 2010 at 12:03 PM

Just wondering, does the perfect pearls come off the paper? It seems with water and perfect pearls it might.

Anonymous May 28, 2010 at 7:01 PM

Love the tutorial. I was expecting you to mix with alcohol? I must try this!

Christie: Thank you so much for the tutorial. I have the Misters and ready to go... BUT I am using Stampin' Up's Pearl Ex since I have lots of it. I would imagine since it does not contain a resin like Perfect Pearls I would have to use Gum Arabic or Alcohol to keep it from rubbing off the paper. Do you agree? Thanks again for sharing

Christie,
I just found your blog yesterday and I'm addicted. You have fantastic organizational skills and excellent tutorials.
Thanks for sharing.

Do you think you can use the Pearl Ex instead of the Perfect Pearls?

I'd also like to know if you could use Pearl Ex, since I have 24 of them and only 3 Perfect Pearls. I do have a bottle of Gum Arabic on the shelf, if that would work. None of my stores locally carry any of the re-inkers, so I'll have to order them online.

Christie Hund July 7, 2010 at 9:58 AM

This morning I tried using Pearl Ex instead of Perfect Pearls and it worked out ok. You have to use about 8 drops (0.4 ml) of gum arabic with the water and scoop of Pearl Ex to make it stick. I still perfer the Perfect Pearls over Pearl Ex but for those that have Pearl Ex on hand that is the formula. Hope this helps. Don't forget, You can also add the ink to give extra color. Have fun!

Christie,
I am really enjoying your blog. You have great ideas. I am new to using the distressed inks and wondered if you would mind giving me the color combinations used to make the glimmer mist. I am just not sure where to start on the mixing of colors. Thanks for your help!

Christie, I have been following your blog for a few weeks. Your tutorials are fantastic, I really appreciate them and all the tips on organization. I am busy organizing my office, sewing, craft room. Am disabled and am already in the donut hole with my prescription plan but I fully intend to make a donation as soon as able. The information is invaluable - have you thought of a book? Many thanks, Georgee

Great ideas! I have done this using hairspray because I thought the glimmer powder required a binder. Water would be much less likely to clog the misters. Thanks!

Another fabulous tip. Thanks for sharing

Linda DesGroseilliers August 26, 2010 at 11:14 AM

Thanks for the link to your color combinations! If someone wants to do these but doesn't have the scoop, you can use the cap that comes on a lot of stick pens like Bics. The extension that would clip it to paper is similar in shape to the scoop you used, just smaller. I'm pretty sure I saw Tim Holtz use the pen cap on one of his tutorials. Again, thanks for the link and all of your great videos!

Hi Christie,
Love your ideas and your room. I have a beautiful 550 sq. foot studio as well. It is so nice to be able to see what others do with their space. Would you be so kind to email me the color combinations to make the glimmer mists? I also have these powders and I am sure they are Perfect Pearls but I am not really sure. Mine have Black lids on them and are made by Jaquard Products. Can you tell me if they are Perfect Pearls. I bought them on Ebay a few years ago and I think they are PP but not sure. Is there a way for you to know? If you would be so kind to send me the color Combinations that would be great. DO I have to use the Tim Holtz distressing inks ( I do have some) or can I use some of the Adirondack inks?

I have just discovered your blog and can't wait to explore. Thank you for the glimmer mist lesson. I will have to try it when I can find the bottles. Do you know any online places to buy them in bulk. 3 at a time is just too slow.

Wow! Never thought about using a recipe box, I've been buying the mini mist holders. Box is much cheaper. Also I never thought about labeling them on the top and side. I spray a small piece of paper and put name of pearls and inks on back, then number them on top of bottle and paper. I too just discovered your blog. Thanks for all the neat ideals.

Hi! I just found your tutorial.

What I'm confused about is this: Why the ink? Does it work with just the Perf. Pearls and water?

Thank you so much.

I just found this and I love it! But when I tried to downlaod the list it said the file had been removed. How can I get it? Thanks so much.

I am a little late in seeing this and find that you have the very best tutorial on making these! I would be interested in getting your recipes as well, but it is no longer available. Could you repost in some way?
